Book Reviews–Edition 7

Welcome to Book Reviews Edition 7. This week I will be reviewing Spifford Max and the Cycle Pups Go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I Saw a Mouse Today, and Sadie The Seed And The Mermaid Fairy.

Spifford Max and the Cycle Pups Go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Spifford Max and the Cycle Pups Go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is written by Louisa Mastromarino. This book is very clearly intended as educational material, however, as an author, I did have a few problems with it.

There are a lot of characters in the story, but none of them really have an distinguishable personalities. It’s almost exclusively talking heads, and some of the language is a bit awkward. The time-traveling bike also seems to come out of no where as a handy solution to be able to talk to historical figures rather than a deliberate part of the story.

As educational material, it serves its purpose, but I am left with so many questions regarding the creative elements of the story. This book gets a 3/5 from me.

I Saw a Mouse Today

I Saw a Mouse Today was written by Vinny Green. Now, I was prepared to really like this because it started off really cute with rhyming, but then the rhymes became awkward and more than once the narrator is furious that there is a mouse because he is the ‘man of the house’. The ending also felt awkward and almost forced. This gets 2/5 from me.

Sadie The Seed And The Mermaid Fairy

Sadie The Seed And The Mermaid Fairy was written by Sofia Anwar and Sylvia Y. While I thought this would be a really cute story, I honestly didn’t like it. First, the mermaid fairy was barely mentioned in the story, and second, Sadie the seed begins to sprout, but this is not explained. It’s mentioned after the fact, and Sadie leaves the mermaid. What could have been a magical story, was under developed and lacking in development. This story gets 2/5 stars from me.

Conclusion and Recommendation:

Thank you for reading Book Reviews: Edition 7. Although I was overall, disappointed this week, I am recommending Spifford Max and the Cycle Pups Go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although I had issues with the lack of creative development, the educational content makes this book worthwhile.
