Book Reviews: Edition 18

Book Reviews: Edition 18 will focus on The Strong Butterfly, A-Z Character Book (A-Z Series), and A Gymkhana With Dee and Friends (Rocking Horse Rodeo).

The Strong Butterfly

The Strong Butterfly is written by Leah Leslie. I think I’ve read books by Leah Leslie before. And, this was probably one of my favorites of her books. It’s a cute story about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. However, I did feel as if it was too easy for the new butterfly to get out of its chrysalis. I think had there been a struggle, that would have been more realistic. And, it would have felt more like it was earned by the main character. This book gets 4/5 stars from me.

A-Z Character Book (A-Z Series)

A to Z Character Book is written by Leah Leslie as well. I think when I came across one of her books, I found the others, and they just got put on my list. This is basically a list of random words beginning with each letter. But, it wasn’t really appropriate for kids. This one gets 2/5 stars from me.

A Gymkhana With Dee and Friends (Rocking Horse Rodeo)

A Gymkhana With Dee and Friends (Rocking Horse Rodeo) was written by M.D. Ford, illustrated by Harry Aveira, and edited by Bobbie Hinman. While I really like the idea of this book because it raises awareness of autism, I felt that there were some improvements that could be made.

First, the only thing really said about the character Henry is that he is autistic and rides a horse. It almost feels forced. Why mention that Henry is autistic at all?

Second, the book gets very technical regarding some of the events. As an adult, I couldn’t follow all of it. How are kids supposed to follow it?

This book gets 3/5 stars from me.
