Book Reviews: Edition 20 focuses on It Must Be Spring, The Grandmother and the fox, and The True Treasure.
It Must Be Spring
It Must Be Spring was written by Michelle Wang and illustrated by Uliana Barabash.
First, the formatting made this a little hard to read. I felt as if I was seeing four small pages rather than the two pages I should have been seeing.
Second, while I understand the aim was to incorporate a different color for each character, the colors of the things they are seeing are not all realistic. It’s also very repetitive for the characters’ actions. It might have been better if the formatting were improved, but it just didn’t draw me in as things are currently.
This book gets 3/5 stars from me.
The Grandmother and the fox
The Grandmother and the fox was written by Khalil Hout Baluch and illustrated by Shervin Mikailin.
I had a lot of issues with this book. First, it was very difficult to read for several reasons. First, the print is overshadowed by the illustrations, so the words were just not clear. Secondly, it wasn’t very well written at all.
The plot jumps around, and there is a lot of irrelevant information added in. In a novel, I would call this an info dump, but this is the first time I’ve seen this in a children’s book. There’s also head hopping from the old woman to the fox.
This book gets 1/5 stars from me.
The True Treasure
The True Treasure was written by Iksha Kalwal and illustrated by Ronald Botts.
While I did have a few issues with this book, this was my favorite of the three books I read this week. This is a story about a little girl named Olivia who falls into a cave and gets lost. It is about her journey to get home and the friends she meets on her way.
Some of the wording is too formal for a children’s book or even a novel. For instance, people don’t really say ‘keenly observing’ or ‘she was terrified’.
There were only a handful of situations where this was the case, and the rest of the story flows beautifully. This book gets 4/5 stars from me.
