Book Reviews: Edition 27

Book Reviews Edition 27 focuses on Gardenia’s Birthday Surprise, Saint Goes to Space, and True Friendship.

Gardenia’s Birthday Surprise

Gardenia’s Birthday Surprise is written by Sarah Pfeffer and illustrated by Mel Schroeder.

This was probably one of the most disorganized children’s stories I’ve read in a long time. And, there wasn’t really a discernible theme or plot. The author started out focusing on the color green, then it turned into listing what happened each day of the week. And, finally how the main character’s earrings turned into butterflies.

Everything about the story was completely random, making it hard to get interested in. This one gets 2/5 stars from me.

Saint Goes to Space

Saint Goes to Space is written by Daris Gilliam and illustrated by Nora Artist.

So, there is one issue I had with the story. It is a huge pet peeve of mine when writers use synonyms of said and asked. It’s awkward. And, it disrupts the flow of the story when they do that.

Aside from that, the story is well written. It’s a cute story about a little boy named Saint who dreams that he explores the solar system. This one gets 4/5 stars from me.

True Friendship

True Friendship is written by Minka Jelincic Gaser. I feel like there was a lot of tell rather than show here. Because of this, I would honestly cut the first and last pages of this story. This would allow the focus to be on the characters rather than feeling the need to tell the reader everything.

Aside from the odd intro and conclusion, this reminded me a bit of Winnie the Pooh or Frog and Toad. As a result, his one gets 4/5 stars from me.
