Universal Studios is one of my favorite places to go in SoCal. Because of this, I’ve gotten pretty familiar with the park over the years. This is my Universal Studios Hollywood Attraction Guide.

The Lower Lot & Springfield
I typically start with the Lower Lot, because this is the best way to avoid the lines. But, there are two instances when you should not start in the Lower Lot.
The first is if you are a fan of the Simpsons and want to ride on the Simpsons Ride. The Simpson’s Ride gets a line super fast, so if it is a priority to ride, you should ride it first. A short wait for Simpsons is 15-20 minutes. And, the average on days I’ve been there (so less busy days) is 30-45 minutes. There is no single rider line.
Oftentimes Homer or Bart or another Simpson is next to the ride for photo ops as shown below.
The second is if you plan on going on a busy day, which I don’t recommend. To figure out which days are going to be busy and which are not, I use a crowd calendar. If you go on a busy day, I would go to the part of the park that is most important to you. Now, if you’re a Harry Potter fan, go to Hogsmeade. If you’re a Jurassic World fan, then you’re still going to the lower lot. If Pets Off the Leash is most important to you, then go there first.
Once you do make it to the lower lot, there are three rides: Jurassic World, Transformers, and The Mummy’s Revenge as well as two different areas for character interactions. I should note that The Mummy’s Revenge is closing permanently in 2023 to be replaced by a Fast and the Furious rollercoaster.
Super Nintendo World will also be opening on the lower lot on February 17, 2023. As I have more updates on Super Nintendo World, I will update you here.
Jurassic World is an in the dark, scary, water coaster. The ride is a tour of Jurassic World, straight out of the movie. It starts off as a normal tour, but then something goes wrong. As the boat heads into Predator Cove, alarms begin going off, and an announcement that assets are out of containment comes over the loudspeaker.
You end up coming face to face with the Indominus Rex as you go down the final hill of the ride.
Also within Jurassic World, is the Raptor Encounter where you can get your photo taken with Blue the Raptor or interact with her little sister Baby Sierra. There’s also a play area for the kids.
Transformers is another ride that gets busy fast. You’re recruited by the autobots to protect the allspark. You’re given 3D glasses, and it begins.
You start out running from Megatron with other Transformers fighting, so you can escape, but then, there is no one left to protect you, so you fight and use the allspark to blow up the enemy when Optimus Prime tells you that your bravery has saved the planet.
You also have the opportunity to talk with Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Bumblebee outside of the ride.
The Mummy’s Revenge
The Mummy’s Revenge is an indoor, scary, in the dark rollercoaster. It starts out slowly with you heading toward the Underworld. The doors open and the coaster takes off. When you reach the end of the track, the coaster reverses and takes you back backwards. You spin around at the last second, and that’s the end of the ride.
The Mummy’s Revenge is probably one of my favorite rides ever, and I was really disappointed to learn that it’s closing forever.
The Studio Tour
I don’t ride the Studio Tour every time I go to Universal. While it’s the highlight of the park, and I highly recommend it for first timers, it doesn’t change a lot.
The tour is about 45 minutes long.
I usually eat lunch at the Three Broomsticks before heading over to the two rides. There is Harry Potter’s Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff.
Harry Potter’s Forbidden Journey
I ride this particular ride at least once, if not twice or more every time I go to the park. Why? Because I never have to wait more than five minutes. There is a single rider line, and there is rarely anyone in the single rider line.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a 3D, motion simulated ride. Muggles (park guests) have been invited for a tour of Hogwarts, including taking a couple of classes such as history of magic. Harry, Ron, and Hermione have a different idea, however.
Hermione enchants some benches to fly, so you can join Harry and Ron on the quidditch pitch. That’s when everything goes wrong. You eventually make it to the quidditch pitch, only for dementors to show up!
You finally arrive back to Hogwarts, where you are applauded for your bravery. Dumbledore then tells you that you are welcome to come back any time.
The height requirement is 48 inches, and child swap is available. Both express pass and as stated above, single rider lines are available. Personal items are prohibited and free lockers are provided.
Flight of the Hippogriff
Flight of the Hippogriff is also a rollercoaster, but it is designed for children. Minimum height is 36 inches. And, children under 48 inches must ride with an adult. Express pass and child swap are available.
There are four shows in Hogsmeade: Ollivander’s, the Frog Choir, the Triwizard Tournament and the nighttime lights at Hogwarts.
Both the Frog Choir and the Triwizard Tournament take place at random times throughout the day on the main stage. The staff members tend to not even know when the shows are going to be unless it is right before.
Ollivander’s involves watching someone being chosen by a wand. Please note that they only choose children around the age of 11, so this is generally a one and done show. See it once, and then don’t worry about it after that. The only exception is if you are traveling with a child that could be chosen.
There are a few different light shows depending on the time of year. This show is only in Hogsmeade as it focuses on Hogwarts castle. There is the Dark Arts show that is usually present during Halloween (but is not limited to Halloween). And, the Magic of Christmas is during the winter holidays.
Minions, Pets Off the Leash, & Super Silly Land
I don’t always ride each of these rides. It really just depends on how long the lines are and how tired I am by this point. The Buggy Ride in Super Silly Land usually has only about a five minute wait, but Minions and Pets Off the Leash can have a 30-45 minute wait.
