Book Reviews: Edition 31

Book Reviews: Edition 31 focuses on Anyone Can Be Normal…Billy Brooks!, Under the sea: Some of our beautiful swimming friends, and SARAH’S ACCOMPLISHMENT.

Anyone Can Be Normal…Billy Brooks!

Anyone Can Be Normal…Billy Brooks! is written by Michael Rady and illustrated by Ashlee Galloway.

I have to admit that I expected this book to be about how people should be normal–the title certainly implies that. Then I read the description that implied the book was about acceptance.

It is true that Billy’s parents encourage him to be himself, but the parting line is that anyone can be normal. I get where the author is trying to go with it, but they don’t quite get there. The title and parting line imply that normal is something to be strived for, despite that being the message of the description or that Billy’s parents express to him. A better title would be “It’s Okay to Be Different” or something similar.

All the rhyming also feels a bit forced to me.

This book gets 4/5 stars from me.

Under the sea: Some of our beautiful swimming friends.

Under the sea: Some of our beautiful swimming friends is written by Linda Booysen.

The book itself is very short for the subject matter. It is intended to be an educational book, but I do have some issue with the inconsistency between sections. That said, this one is better than some others of hers I’ve read.

This book gets 4/5 stars from me.

SARAH’S ACCOMPLISHMENT

SARAH’S ACCOMPLISHMENT is written by Corey Campbell. Of the three books I read, this was my least favorite. I had several issues with how the story was written.

First, it was hard to read because basic grammatical rules were not followed. Each speaker needs their own paragraph, but everything was lumped together. It was also written in present tense, which isn’t terrible on its own, but then there is an awkward shift to past tense to indicate the passage of time.

On top of the grammatical issues, the story is just not well developed. It’s a summary of the events rather than putting the reader inside the story to experience it with Sarah. This book gets 2/5 stars from me.

Conclusions & Recommendations
